Fishing along with Para marine activities like Dry
fish ,Prawn farming constitues the second Major economy for the district.
The marine ecosystem provides mankind with food, medicines, industrial
products and pleasure.

AGRICULTURE
The Second Major Economy
Nagapattinam District is a coastal District of Tamilnadu.
It lies between 10.10o
to 11.20o North latitude and 79.15o to 79. 50o East longitude.
It is bounded by Bay of Bengal on the east the palk strait on the south, The Tiruvarur and Thanjavur
District on the West and Northwest and Cuddalore District on the North. Nagapattinam District with
an area of 2715.83 Square kilometres, still continutes to contribute its share in the production of Rice in Tamilnadu.

We have raised so many importantagricultural crop in
our District. Rice, Groundnut, Pulses, Gingelly, Sugarcane
and Cotton. The details of Normal are coverage are given below.

details of schemes implemented for the welfare of the citizens, the
activities of the department connected with the people of the state
and the normal time taken for the implementation of such schemes have

OBJECTIVES OF THE AGRICULTURE DEPARTMENT
- Scientific approach Taking efforts for uplift of the rural
economy and reservation of ecological balance.
- based on the requirements of Agro climatic zones.
- To march towards second green revolution by increasing
productivity, production and profitability.
- implementation of farmers welfare schemes such as Integrated
Watershed Development, land management, development of water resources,
organic farming especially use of green manure, bio fertilizer,
bioconversion of agricultural wastes, bio pesticides and parasites.
Integrated Pest Management, remunerative price to agricultural
produce, processing, value addition to agricultural produce promotion
of export potential crops, with a view to ensure economic improvement,
besides rural prosperity
SERVICES AND SUBSIDIES GIVEN TO THE FARMERS THROUGH AGRICULTURE DEPARTMENT
Extension Services
- The Assistant Agricultural Officers positioned at village level
will visit each segment of the village once in 15 days. The farmers
may meet him at the contact point for their requirements.
- The farmers may get their doubts clarified from their group Assistant
Agricultural Officers or Agricultural Officers.
- If necessary, the Assistant Agricultural Officer may be taken
to their fields to get technical guidance.
- Farmers may get benefited by adopting in their fields the technologies
demonstrated by the Assistant Agricultural Officers in the evening village meetings.
- Agricultural Officer (Information and training) or Agricultural Officer (SMS)
may be approached for solving the problems of pests diseases in the cropping.
- The concerned Agricultural Development Officer at the block headquarters
may be contacted for relief measures during natural calamities like flood and drought.
- Soil analysis and irrigation water analysis can be done either through Assistant
Agricultural Officer or directly depositing the soil/water samples duly paying the
prescribed fees. If 100 or more samples either soil or irrigation water are to be
analyzed at the same time, the mobile soil testing van may be requisitioned through
the concerned Assistant Director of Agriculture
- The Agricultural Chemist may be approached through Assistant Agricultural
Officer for reclaiming the saline and alkaline soils.
- The Agricultural programmes of Television and Radio may be utilized by the
farmers for technical guidance in the cultivation of crops. The Joint Director
of Agriculture of their district may be approached for taking part in agricultural
programmes of Television/ Radio.
- For allied activities of agriculture such as Horticulture Development,
Sericulture, Agricultural Marketing through regulated markets, cultivation
loans through Co-operatives, the Agricultural Officers/ Agricultural Development
Officers/ Assistant Directors of Agriculture may be contacted for guidance.
- A TANWA has been positioned in each Agricultural Division for
training and technical guidance to farm women which conducts village
based training, follow up visits and farm conference. Farm women may
get benefited from the same.
- Farmers training centres are functioning in Kancheepuram,
Tindivanam, Navlock (Vellore District), Dharmapuri, Salem, Bhavani,
Kudumianmalai (Pudukkottai) Sakkottai (Thanjavur), Lalkudi (Trichy)
Paramakudi (Ramanad) Tirunelveli and Tirupathisaram (Kanyakumari).
Each Farmers Training Centre conducts 22 village based training,
10 trainings for Farmer discussion group?s convenors 44 method
demonstrations and 110 peripatetilc demonstrations in a year.
Besides, farm news, question and answers, etc. programmes are conducted
through Farm Radio Service. Further it conducts Farmer?s Festival, Study tour, etc.. These programmes
may be best utilised by the farmers.
- Daily at 6.40 AM there is an exclusive programme :Uzhavarkallukku Oru Varthai"
(A word to farmers) in the AIR through which the crop production messages, pests and diseases
for warnings, etc. are broad casted for the benefit of farmers.
- Farmers Field School are conducted in 1400 locations under Integrated
Cereals Development Programme-Rice and in 1100 locations under Integrated
Cotton Development Programme each having a group of 25 farmers. The farmers
around may get benefited either by participation or interaction.
- 50 Ha demonstrations are conducted one per each block participated by all departments
under ministry of Agriculture which will benefit the farmers.
- A subsidy of Rs.6000/Ha, i.e. Rs.3000 per Ha for establishment of new coconut gardens and Rs.
1500 per year for subsequent 2 years for maintenance is available through Coconut Development Board
under area expansion Programme. Farmers may get benefited.
- Crop Yield Competition are conducted at State Level and District Level.
For paddy and groundnut, the first and second prizes at State level are Rs. 25000/-
and Rs.15000/- respectively. For other crops it is Rs.8000/- and Rs.4000/- respectively.
For Paddy and irrigated groundnut at district level the first and second prizes are Rs.8000/-
and Rs. 4000/- and for other crops at district level Rs. 4000/- and Rs. 2000/-
respectively. The farmers may take part in the competition and get benefited.
IN PUT SUPPLY AND QUALITY CONTROL
- Agricultural Extension centres are functioning at two per Panchayat Union.
I.e. one at Panchayat Union head quarters and the other at a major
place within the Panchayat Union jurisdiction (in some cases at a third place ).
All inputs dealt by Agriculture Department are distributed through Agricultural
extension Centre for all their crop needs.
- The availability of inputs and the details of subsidy available may be known
from Assistant Agricultural Officers concerned or Agricultural Development Officers
of the Agricultural Extension Centre. These details are depicted in the information
boards kept in the Agricultural Extension Centers.
- The Agricultural Development Officers of the concerned Panchayat Union may be
contacted for arrangement of the seed farms.
- Micro nutrient mixtures intended for groundnut, gingili and
sunflower are sold at subsidized cost in the Agricultural Extension
Centers which may be availed of.
5. Similarly bio fertilizers for pulses and oilseeds are sold at subsidized cost in
Agricultural Extension Centers for farmers use.
- The implements required fit day to day agricultural
operation viz. Crowbar and mammutty are sold at 50%. The farmers may avail this till the scheme is completed.
- Quality coconut seedlings of Tall. TxD and DxT varieties are produced in 26 coconut nurseries.
The Agricultural Extension Centers concerned may be approached for the farmers requirement.
- For the control of early shoot borer and inter code borer of sugarcane parasites are produced
in 21 parasite breeding centers to cover 10500Ha. The farmer can make use of this facility.
- Clarification on the sale of fertilizers and pesticides at Government prescribed prices and
quality standards can be had from concerned Assistant Director of Agriculture or Agricultural Officer
(Quality Control) of his office.
- Eight lakhs Fertilizer identity cards will be
issued to the farmers in 27 Agricultural Divisions to enable the
farmers to get fertilizers in time at fixed prices through Co-operative Institutions.
